NOVA launches the fourth edition of the Research Impact Narratives Challenge
NOVA University Lisbon has launched the 2026 Research Impact Narratives Challenge, inviting teaching and research staff from all its Academic Units to communicate the impact of their scientific work through narratives written for a general audience. Applications are open from 27 April to 8 June 2026.
Scientific research is a core pillar of NOVA, with the potential to generate significant impact across society, including social, environmental, political, cultural, technological and economic dimensions, as well as health and quality of life. As evidence‑based decision‑making becomes increasingly central in public, business and individual contexts, researchers are encouraged to clearly communicate the real‑world implications of their work.
This challenge aims to strengthen researchers’ capacity to demonstrate the impact of their projects and to highlight to society how research funding contributes not only to the advancement of knowledge, but also to tangible societal benefits, in line with the growing emphasis placed on impact by national and European funding agencies.
The five best submissions will each receive a €2,000 monetary prize, along with additional distinctions outlined in the official regulations.
The challenge is open to all NOVA teaching and research staff, regardless of discipline or field, provided that the submitted projects or initiatives meet the eligibility criteria set out in the regulations available on NOVA’s website. Applications must be submitted electronically via the designated form.
To support this initiative, NOVA provides dedicated support materials and will host the online masterclass “Research Impact in Practice: Measurement, Analysis and Communication”, led by Sara Michels, with the support of Chaperone, in partnership with Native Scientists.
The session will take place on 19 May 2026, from 2:30 pm to 4:30 pm, and focuses on practical methodologies for identifying, measuring and communicating research impact. Participation is free, subject to mandatory registration by 17 May 2026.
