A new method to produce a chemical compound named  9-Thiabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione in a one-pot process was invented.

Technology Overview

The method includes hydrogenation of biogenic succinic acid in high pressure carbon dioxide in a specific condition described below.

The compound is a building block used for synthesis of biomedicine and namomedicine, i.e. in healthcare derived features obtained from building blocks.

Reaction mixture consists of:

  • catalyst – Palladium on alumina, 5wt% as a powder;
  • substrate – succinic acid as a solid;
  • matrix of ionic liquid – 1-Buthyl-3-methylimidazolium hydrogen sulfate

Reaction of hydrogenation takes 18 hours. Total pressure of reaction is set on 170 (one hundred seventy) bars, which contains 60 (sixty) bars of hydrogen. The rest of pressure is a high pressure CO2 introduced to the reaction system. The temperature of reaction is 160 (one hundred sixty) degrees of Celsius.

Post-reaction mixture contains the compound of 9-Thiabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione with the selectivity in a range of 70-90% analysed by Gas Chromatography method and Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy method.
