From 5 to 9 May 2025, NOVA University Lisbon will host the EUTOPIA MORE Innovation Challenges for Researchers. Over five days, researchers from EUTOPIA partner universities will gather in the Campolide Campus to tackle real-world challenges related to the ocean — an area of strategic importance both to NOVA’s scientific community and to the city itself. 

The initiative aims to promote multidisciplinary collaboration and develop innovative solutions with real impact on the public and private sectors. Throughout the programme, participants will work in diverse teams, bringing together researchers from different fields and institutions, and collaborating directly with external stakeholders.

To raise awareness within the NOVA community concerning the potentials and legal intricacies surrounding intellectual property (IP), the objective of this workshop is to convene those who are closely tied to the software, AI, and computer science domains, as well as others who develop software-based solutions. Special emphasis is placed on scientists, researchers, and both academic and non-academic staff, aiming to impart insights into the significance of IP in their endeavours and projects, while equipping them with fundamental knowledge on the subject.

Additionally, the event aims to clarify NOVA's academic community on its policies and internal procedures, providing valuable insights into best practices and practical tips.

The safeguarding of intellectual property (IP) becomes paramount in fostering the development of cutting-edge solutions in software and artificial intelligence (AI), with profound societal impacts. Just as in other industries, comprehending the implications and advantages of IP is central in this dynamic field. Intellectual capital thus emerges as a cornerstone in this landscape, underscoring the critical need to grasp the ramifications and benefits of IP. 

Within NOVA’s ecosystem, the recognition of impact creation in the software and AI industries is pivotal. To empower researchers and staff in this realm, our workshop delves into the intricacies of IP, offering valuable insights and addressing pertinent questions. Recent technological advancements have birthed innovative tools with diverse applications in software and AI, revolutionizing research paradigms. These advancements usher in novel methods for information exchange among users and developers, along with innovative technical solutions tailored for specific applications. 

Throughout the workshop, participants will gain an in-depth understanding of various intellectual property types and their relevance to the software and AI sectors. Practical insights into strategies aimed at safeguarding intellectual property and capitalizing on research outcomes will also be provided. 

Real-world case studies and open discussions will allow participants to delve into specific IP challenges faced by academic researchers in the software and AI industries. By the workshop's conclusion, attendees will depart with a heightened appreciation for intellectual property's significance in academic research, armed with practical strategies for safeguarding and commercializing their innovative endeavours. 

Participants are invited to bring their own use cases to be discussed.
