Eyal Amitai

Short biography I became CEO of an electronic contract manufacturer in 2005, in 2015 I took it to become a medical device CDMO (contract design & manufacturing organisation) with FDA listing. In 20019 we brought in a PE and in 2021 I brought an outside CEO to take my place, staying as Executive Director until we sold 100% to a large PE in 2023. During my time the company grew from 170 to 1,500 employees and 2 factories in China as well as 1 in Thailand, an R&D centre in Israel and sales in Europe & US. Main skills Strategic Planning throughout the pyramid of vision, goals, top level strategy, basic strategy, tactics and operational. Leadership: managing through internal-entrepreneurs & leadership teams (VPs, EVPs, etc...), leading through inspiration and self-motivation, etc... Operational Excellence in manufacturing. Medical/FDA requirements in Manufacturing & Quality Assurance & control Profitability in complex operating environment Zero defect manufacturing (it's never zero, but the point is the organisation understands that is a main goal during manufacturing and designs the whole process and support around it) Sales processes & funnel design Design for manufacturability Delegating in leadership I know the above seems like a lot of capabilities, but running a company for 16 years I had to learn everything and do it relatively well - otherwise the company would not have survived...I also know what it looks like when someone capable is doing it, so this is just a partial list Areas of interest for mentoring Young entrepreneurs about to set off, especially from engineering & business background Mid-level management going into senior management Perhaps most importantly - new CEOs (within first 2-3 years) - this is a lonely job that is unlike senior management or any other management by an order of magnitude. I've made lots of the mistakes, would like to help others avoid them Motivation to be a mentor I became a CEO at 29 years old, I was not prepared, not supported and didn't have resources. Thus, I made a ton of mistakes and suffered over many years until I found my feet. Most of the things that made me much better at my job as CEO aren't rocket science but can be hard to figure out on your own, I'd like to help leaders be better, have more fun being leaders and work more effectively. In order to raise awareness amongst the NOVA community regarding the potentialities and legal procedures surrounding IP, the purpose of this workshop is to gather the entirety of NOVA community closely related to the health and biotech fields, with special emphasis on scientists, researchers, and other academic and non-academic staff, to learn about the importance of IP in their works and projects, as well as to provide them with some basic knowledge on the subject. It is also a purpose of this event to elucidate NOVA’s academic community on its policies and internal procedures, whilst providing some insights on best practices and other useful tips.

[/et_pb_accordion_item][et_pb_accordion_item title="What's it about?" _builder_version="4.21.0" _module_preset="default" global_colors_info="{}" open="off"]

The presence of inventive, enthusiastic, and imaginative individuals is instrumental in propelling the transition towards a better and more sustainable future, and the protection of intellectual property (IP) can facilitate the development of a better tomorrow.

NOVA’s ecosystem is no exception to this paradigm. With a strong linkage to impact creation, this event is held to help researchers and support staff to boost the impact of their research, to acknowledge some technicalities regarding IP and to answer to their own questions related to the subject.

To do this, the event is structured following a workshop approach, entailing introductory remarks on the importance of IP on research projects. It should also stimulate fruitful discussions regarding the actual challenges that scientists, researchers and other academic and non-academic staff face when managing their projects, IP portfolio and knowledge transfer strategies. This is a great opportunity to stimulate faculty in engaging with an expert on this field by having the possibility to have a short meeting with the speakers and a NOVA innovation manager.

Participants are invited to bring their own use cases to be discussed.

Postdoctoral Research Investigating Novel Therapeutics for Chronic and Rare Diseases

NOVA and Galp will develop new solutions for clean and renewable energies

NOVA University Lisbon and Galp will promote, over the next three years, the development of new solutions in the field of clean and renewable energies by students, faculty and researchers gathered in the first interdisciplinary community of the University, called "Zero Carbon Energy". Through a protocol signed this Thursday by the two institutions, NOVA places all its know-how and its community at the service of the industry to find alternatives that can help to mitigate the effects of climate change, through a process of decarbonization, meeting the European Union's goals of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. In this domain, research projects will be developed in areas such as Renewable Energies, Mobility and Batteries. In the area of innovation and entrepreneurship, the multidisciplinary community of NOVA students and researchers will be called to participate in idea competitions, hackathons and in the development of proofs of concept, in response to challenges launched by Galp aligned with the sustainable development goals. The protocol signing ceremony was attended, on the side of NOVA, by the Rector, João Sàágua, and the Vice-Rector, Isabel Rocha, and, on the side of Galp, by Georgios Papadimitriou, Member of the Board of Directors and of the Executive Committee, COO Renewables & New Businesses, and by Ana Casaca, Global Head of Innovation. Isabel Rocha, Vice-Rector for Research, Innovation and Value Creation, said that "Sustainability is one of the central pillars of NOVA and being able to contribute with our research excellence to find greener alternatives in the energy field is the certainty that we are creating value for our community. It is time for us to act with solutions based on the best science and technology. This is also the role of academia and NOVA in particular". In turn, Ana Casaca, Global Head of Innovation at Galp, added that "Half of the technologies that will help us decarbonise the world and make the energy transition are not yet known or tested. Collaboration with universities and the expansion of our innovation ecosystem is essential for Galp to overcome these technological challenges, thus being closer to the goal of carbon neutrality in 2050 and the democratisation of sustainable and inclusive energy solutions demanded by society." In addition to areas related to research and innovation, this protocol will enable the development of joint initiatives in the area of education, as well as the promotion of talent and employment in the energy sector.
